Birth: 1894 Lucknow, NSW, Australia Death: 28 September 1917 (age 23) France, Killed in Action Cemetery or Memorial: Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium Father: Richard RODWELL (1862 - 1920) Mother: Ann (Annie) AYLIN (1866 - 1938) William enlisted 23 November 1915 at Casula. He was living at Yerranderie and gave his occupation as Miner and his next of kin his father Richard Rodwell of Yerranderie via Camden and later his mother Mrs Annie Rodwell of North Sydney. William served in C Company 56th Battalion A.I.F. He departed Sydney on the 'Ceramic' and arrived France via Egypt June 1916. He attended Divisional Bomb School France October 1916. He was appointed Lance Corporal 14 September 1917. William's brother Richard Rodwell (Private 2733 MSM) (b. Bathurst) served in the 53rd Battalion A.I.F. from 1916. He was wounded in action in France twice and was was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal 18 June 1918 in France. He returned to Australia on the 'Margha' 9 March 1919. Lance Corporal William George RODWELL was killed in action in France 28 September 1917 age 23. |
